Gap
Open splits in the inner ply or plies, or improperly joined veneer when joined veneers are used for inner plies.

Grain
Arrangement of wood fibers and pores evident on cut and/or finished wood products. The direction, size, arrangement and appearance of the fibers in wood or veneer. The appearance of the grain varies with both the species and the cut.

Grain Slope
Expression of the angle of the grain to the long edges of the veneer component.

Grain Sweep
Expression of the angle of the grain to the long edges of the veneer component over the area extending one-eighth of the length of the piece from the ends.

Grand Master Key
A key that operates locks in several groups, each of which has its own master key.

Gum Pockets
Well-defined openings between rings of annual growth, containing gum or evidence of gum prior to accumulations.

Gum Spots
Well-defined openings between rings of annual growth, usually containing gum or pitch.

Half Round
A method of cutting veneers on an off-center lathe that results in modified characteristics of both rotary and plain sliced veneers. Often used in red and white oak.

Hand (of a lock, etc.)
A term used to indicate the direction of swing or movement, and/or locking security side of a door.

Handed (locks, etc.)
A term used to indicate that the article is for use only on doors of the designated hand.

Hardboard
Constructed of inter-felted fibers consolidated and formed under heat and pressure into panels.

Hardwood
Generally obtained from deciduous trees. Does not refer to the specific density or resistance to wear and abuse.

Heartwood
The inactive cells of the inner tree, located below the
Sapwood. The cells cavities of the heartwood may contain deposit which make it darker in color than the sapwood.

High Pressure Decorative Laminate (HPDL)
Melamine and phenolic resin impregnated papers with decorative surfaces protected by a clear melamine coating.

Hinge
Two plates joined together by a pin and attached to a door and its frame whereby a door is supported and is enabled to swing or move.

Hinge Stile (of a door)
The stile to which the hinges are applied as distinguished from the lock stile.

Hub
The part of a lock through which the spindle passes to actuate the mechanism.
